Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

• Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing

Academic integrity and writing are inextricably linked in the field of academics. Academic integrity involves adherence to specific principles and standards. For instance, academic integrity means students must avoid plagiarism. Professional and academic writing cannot be achieved without integrity (Jamieson & Howard, 2019). Academic integrity is part of the writing process when nurses are collecting data and researching. For instance, it is vital to obtain informed consent from the participants. The relationship between academic integrity and writing extends beyond just avoiding plagiarism. It encompasses the entire research and writing process, including accurately representing sources, properly citing references, and presenting original ideas clearly and honestly. Maintaining academic integrity in writing helps build credibility and trust in the academic community and prepares students for ethical professional practice.

• Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics

Professional practices and scholarly ethics are intertwined since the bottom line is a set of standards that individuals adhere to in their professional work. Professional practices and scholarly ethics build on each other (Milton, 2019). A person with strong scholarly ethics has strong skills which are transferred to professional practice. Scholarly ethics is the commitment to integrity and observing honesty, transparency, competence, and accountability (Milton, 2019). For instance, nurses should adhere to professional practices such as integrity, self-respect, and openness. Nurses should use the same standards while developing scholarly materials or research (Milton, 2019). For instance, students should not submit plagiarized work as their original writing since it would amount to loss of integrity. Scholarly ethics attracts trust from the public about professional standards of practice based on reliable evidence. The relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics extends to all aspects of a nurse’s career, from patient care to research and publication. Upholding these ethical standards ensures the advancement of nursing knowledge and practice while maintaining public trust in the profession.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

• Identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your 1) academic work while a student of the MSN program, and 2) professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional.

The strategies of maintaining integrity and ethics in academic work as a student of MSN program involves using Grammarly and SafeAssign. The tools are essential in ensuring integrity as a student. Other strategies include consistently and accurately citing from scholarly sources. I will maintain ethics by completing my independent work without copying from others or from the internet. Additionally, the strategies of maintaining integrity as a professional involves upholding work ethics, adhering to the ethics of nursing practice, and learning new skills to address ethical dilemmas in the work environment. The resources I propose to use include the Writing Center, Academic Services Adviser, and library staff. The approaches include visiting the Writing Center consistently to study the guidelines for completing assignments. The resources I will use as a professional include The Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements by American Nurses Association and journals such as American Journal of Nursing. To further enhance my academic integrity, I plan to participate in workshops on research ethics and proper citation techniques offered by the university. As a professional, I will actively engage in continuing education courses focused on ethical decision-making in nursing practice and stay updated on changes in healthcare regulations and ethical guidelines.

Module 3 | Part 3: Research Analysis

Step 1: Research Analysis

Complete the table below

Topic of Interest: Workplace Violence in Healthcare Settings

Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI)

Schmidt, M. J., Wessling, E. G., McPhaul, K., London, M., & Lipscomb, J. (2019). Workplace violence in health care: An overview and practical approach for prevention. Psychiatric Annals, 49(11), 482- 486. doi:http://dx.doi.org.ezp.waldenulibrary.org/10.3928/00485713- 20191010-01

Professional Practice Use:

One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article

One of the dangers facing healthcare workers at workplaces is workplace violence. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the rate of workplace safety is deteriorating. For instance, the bureau indicates that healthcare workers can spend 13 percent of their time away from work due to workplace violence. The article can be used to learn about the dangers and prevention methods. The information creates awareness for the stakeholders to take action. Healthcare administrators can use this information to develop comprehensive workplace violence prevention programs, including staff training, environmental modifications, and reporting systems.

Research Analysis Matrix

Add more rows if necessary Strengths of the Research Limitations of the Research Relevancy to Topic of Interest Notes

The study provides an in-depth view of workplace violence. It is difficult to establish the independent and dependent variables from the descriptive study. The topic is relevant due to the increasing cases of workplace violence. The study describes workplace violence and provides critical information about the topic.

The study forms the basis of research questions that can inspire further investigation of the topic. Human behavior is likely to improve upon realization of surveillance. The change of behavior affects outcomes. The study deals with the real issues of workplace violence.

The research is a fertile ground for developing a relevant hypothesis. Participants of the study are likely to give opinions from personal experiences and not the real dynamic of workplace violence.

The researcher has an opportunity to collect firsthand information from the participants through observation of behavior. The participants are at risk of giving biased judgment of workplace violence.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

Craft a summary (2-3 paragraph) below that includes the following:

• Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research

• Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research

• Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research

The approach of identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research is finding articles that have been published in recognized journals. Some of the recognized journals include American Journal of Nursing (AJN) and the Journal of Professional Nursing (JPN). The article should meet a basic requirement of peer-review. Peer-reviewed research involves research that undergoes the review of peers before it is published. Another requirement is that the studies should be systematic reviews, control trials, and randomized control trials. One of the strategies of identifying peer-reviewed journals is filtering the search tools to get the peer-reviewed scholarly articles.

Some of the resources I intend to use to find peer-reviewed research is identifying specific journals for deriving the articles. For instance, Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) is a resource for nurses. Psychiatry Journal is for identifying articles, article reviews, and clinical studies on psychiatry research and practice. The articles are scholarly journals which are reliable, accurate, factual, and organized research findings. Another resource is American Psychiatric Association which published evidence-based articles that can be used to enhance nurse practice and provide latest information on different topics.

The process of identifying peer-review articles and how scholars develop peer-reviewed articles is illustrated as follows:

[Diagram omitted]

In addition to these strategies, I plan to utilize database-specific features such as subject headings and Boolean operators to refine my searches. I will also consult with librarians to learn advanced search techniques and stay updated on new resources available through the university library. Regularly attending workshops on research methods and critical appraisal of literature will further enhance my ability to identify and analyze high-quality, peer-reviewed research relevant to my field of study.

Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan

I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.

The results of my efforts are below.

Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties

My first nursing specialty is to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), but the second preference is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The role of PMHNP is to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with mental illnesses. PMHNPs work with diverse patients suffering from mood disorders, anxiety disorders, issues of substance and drug abuse, and mental health issues resulting from advanced age such as dementia. PMHNPs work as a team or alone to deliver quality care to patients. Treatment involves individualized plans or group therapy. PMHNPs can work in hospitals, homes, prisons, psychiatric hospitals, and outpatient mental health centers.

The second preference is the role of a family nurse practitioner which involves working with children and adults to enhance health and wellness. The focus of family nurse practitioners is preventive care. An FNP works under supervision of a physician, but some states allow independent practice. FNPs work in family clinics and underserved populations. While both specialties require a strong foundation in advanced practice nursing, PMHNPs focus more on mental health interventions and psychopharmacology, whereas FNPs have a broader scope of practice covering various health conditions across the lifespan.

Comparison Table:

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Family Nurse Practitioner

Treatment involves developing individualized plans such as counseling The focus is on preventative care.

PMHNP can work independently depending on state laws FNP work under supervision but some states allow less supervision due to shortage of staff.

PMHNP work in prisons, mental health facilities, psychiatric hospitals, and schools. FNP work in clinics and less privileged communities.

Treatment involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Encounter with a patient involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

PMHNP work with children and adults FNP work with children and adults

Works with patients with mood disorders, substance abuse, and anxiety. Works with patients to maintain health and wellness

Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty

The reasons for choosing my PMHNP specialization is my interest to understand the causes of mental health and diverse treatment methods. My cousin was diagnosed with depression and substance abuse addiction. I developed the interest to understand how to make people better emotionally. I desired to help people get better and overcome mental illnesses and function normally. It was obvious that my calling was in healthcare, and specifically mental health. During my initial encounter with psychiatrists and therapists, I realized how they were enjoying their work and transforming lives. The growing need for mental health services, especially in the wake of global events like the COVID-19 pandemic, further solidifies my decision to pursue this specialization. As a PMHNP, I will be well-positioned to address the increasing demand for mental health care and contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.

Step 3: Professional Organizations

The selected professional organization is American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). I can become a member of the organization by filling membership forms for regular membership. The regular membership involves submitting details of the nurse registration, paying the dues, and engaging in efforts that support the goals of the association. Members can join online or by making a call. APNA offers various membership benefits, including access to continuing education resources, networking opportunities, and the latest research in psychiatric nursing. By actively participating in APNA, I can stay current with best practices, contribute to the field through research or committee work, and connect with other professionals who share my passion for mental health care.
