I didn’t know that 96.5% of the students are from low-income families. This is the most important fact about the community that I didn’t know. Maslow’s Hierarchy has a second level called “Security and Safety Needs,” which is about money. “Maslow thought that people have an innate desire to reach their full potential, or “self-actualize.” But a number of more basic needs must be met before this ultimate goal can be reached.” (Cherry, 2022), which means that they have to get past all four levels and reach “Self-Actualization” to really change their behavior. If students go home to a place where financial security is the most important thing, how can they be expected to care about their personal growth? The answer is that these students and their families care more about making ends meet than about doing well in school. There are times when students reach level 5, but I think they can only do so if they reach the Esteem level and feel respected and like they have value. It means that as teachers, we need to be aware of how our students feel and how they are physically. A few weeks ago, my campus made a cultural contract. They asked the students what one word would be the strongest to use on the contract, and 98% of the students said “respect.” When asked why, they said that respect would make them feel safe, loved, and included, which would lead to a better learning environment.

Since good curriculum leaders make decisions based on complete and detailed information about the stressors that students face at home and in their communities, tell the school about a demographic fact you learned about your community that you didn’t know before and that is important for the school to know.
When looking at student data, school leaders need to know how important it is to know the background demographics of the school community. Using the information from separated data will help campus administrators better help students do well in school. According to the TAPR reports, it is clear that as the number of students at my campus has grown, so has the number of students who are at risk. The number of English learners, students in Special Education, and students who are poor on my campus keeps going up every year. “Children who grow up in economically disadvantaged environments are more likely to do poorly in school,” says UC Davis (2020). (para 1).
Educators will be able to help these groups better if they use special tools and programs. But because of money problems, my campus has kept the same number of staff and programs for the past few years. So, the fact that there are more students at risk on campus is making it harder for teachers to meet the students’ educational needs. I’ve worked at my campus for more than six years, and it’s starting to become clear that the number of students is growing. Still, the average teacher might not have noticed that there were more students at risk if they hadn’t read the TAPR reports. It is important to be aware of these demographics so that plans for continuous improvement can be made to meet the needs of a wide range of students.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory is based on figuring out what people are really like. Maslow’s idea about a person’s psychological and social needs is based on the widely used pyramid of basic needs (Cherry, 2022). People criticize Maslow’s theory because they don’t think there is a hierarchy of needs. However, three additions to the original theory give more insight into how things are done today. Aesthetic needs are important to me, and I see them in a lot of students on campus. Music, fashion, and other forms of art are very popular in today’s world. Many students may look past their social differences and spend a lot of time and energy on aesthetic needs because it makes them happy and gives them a sense of purpose. This seems to be the most important human need because it comes from a place of passion and individualism. Schools try to help each student become a committed, successful person in the future.
I work in a middle school, where I see a lot of students trying to figure out who they are and what they like. I think this is the best model because, over time, students have gone from being raised in a more traditional way to being more shallow, which has also made them less mature. For example, students who wear name-brand shoes tend to be more confident than those who don’t. Even though a student’s brand of clothes shouldn’t be a sign of their status quo or level of academic achievement, how they look is a common factor in today’s classrooms. Aside from how they look, students also add to Maslow’s Aesthetic Needs theory because they feel like they can show their creativity in school work through music. Students often finish their work faster when they can listen to their favorite music than when they can’t. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory shows that students have a need to show off their inner creativity, which is easy for others to see through visual representations and other creative efforts.
