Rehabilitation
It’s the process of restoring a person into a useful state and being able to participate in the constructive part of society. Over the past decades, the American criminal justice system had put a lot of focus on punishing criminals as a way of reducing crime. They put people in jail as a way of preventing crime and also involving punishments that will prevent the criminal from re-offending. This approaches not only led to an increase in crime but also increased the number of the re-offenders arrests. Since the minds of those behind bars and their circumstances differ from those in society. The more punishment and time spent behind bars only provides them with the opportunity to learn new and better ways of committing a crime since they are together with other convicts. They can also establish connections that enable them to be deeply involved in criminal activities (Benson, 2003).
I believe prisoners can get rehabilitated since these programs provide the prisoner with a chance of self-evaluation. This enables them to create goals that will help them during imprisonment and upon release. It not only focuses on the crime committed but the factors that may have contributed to him committing the crime. Most of the criminals who enter the justice system are disordered. The past system did nothing to address or mitigate these disorders and eventually released them back to society. This is one of the causes of the high rate of recidivism experienced in society. Rehabilitating the prisoners focuses on addressing these disorders and aims at recidivism reduction. Some of the elements focused upon may include criminal thinking, this involves their attitude, values, and believes that may propel them to commit a crime. Other factors may involve the inability to avoid a criminal activity when placed in a fixed situation. Those with aggressive, impulsive or manipulative personality may also result in criminal activities. Being associated only and raised in a criminal-like background, poor relationship with a partner or family. Low performance, involvement or receiving satisfaction in school or work. Problem with alcohol, drugs and having no satisfaction of non-crime activities. These are some of the factors that result in crime and are the main focal points in rehabilitating the prisoners.
The rehabilitative activities to address these problems may involve providing academic education. These may range from adult education to college education programs, they help provide basic knowledge to the inmates and reduce illiteracy in prisons. Technical education that equips them with useful skills to use when back into society, this may include carpentry masonry and auto-repair. Therapy sessions that aim at addressing and changing the pattern of behavior that may result in a crime. These may involve anger management program and those addressing the criminal mind. Training that helps in job preparedness for those upon release may include job interview training this help them in society re-entry period. Programs that help the inmates who are substance dependent, programs focusing on inmate’s art-correction and even innovative program grants. All these programs aim at developing physical, psychological, social and occupational skills that may enable the inmates to be useful and have good functional abilities (Johnson University Hospital, 2015).
These prisoners are not criminals all the time and hence they can be re-formed. Since these rehabilitation programs focus on the ability to address the prisoner’s needs. These programs also provide the inmate’s with an alternative way of thinking and acting, with a goal on pro-social methods of dealing with daily struggles without resorting to criminal activities. Hence prisoners can be rehabilitated.
