Competing Needs in Nursing Burnout
The nursing profession is filled with high stress and job burnout, and nurses are expected to respond to complex situations daily, quickly. Nurse managers may view the competing needs in budgeting and turnover more important than the burnout of their staff, and this creates an exhausting and detrimental work environment. Nurses consider the needs of their patients to, at times, be more important than their physical and mental capabilities.
Policy development and Competing Needs
Nurses are faced with ethical dilemmas daily; inadequate staffing leading to nursing burnout is an ethical dilemma because it creates an unsafe work environment. Policies should focus on training nurses on ethical dilemmas and how to voice concerns to leaders effectively and for the managers to recognize when workloads are unsafe.
