Nurse Career and Education
Perhaps you are confused about the career path that you ought to take. Maybe you should take some time to consider a career in nursing. Before you do that you need to ask yourself “what is nursing?” In simple terms, the term nursing refers to the art or profession of taking care of patients. Nurses are therefore the individuals who shoulder the noble responsibility of taking care of: injured patients, those suffering from curable diseases, the ones who are chronically ill, neonates, elderly as well as patients who have undergone surgery among others. It therefore follows that a nurse is a person who have the best interest of the patients and who does everything possible within the limit of their power to make patients live quality lives. Respect for the human life and the desire to meet the healthcare needs of patients are some the defining qualities of a nurse. This field falls under sciences and this means that you have to be professionally trained in order to pursue a nurse career.
It is good to note that not everyone is admitted to pursue a career in nursing. For starters, you must have a high school diploma or an equivalent of that in order for your application to be accepted. You must also have passed in mathematics as well as in sciences. Majority of students prefer to pursue a BSN (Bachelor of Science in nursing) in an institution of higher learning before they can proceed to study to become a registered nurse (RN). If you would like to have a deeper knowledge of this field and by so doing advance in your nurse career then you can pursue post graduate studies. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is pursued by those candidates who already have a BSN. You can later study for a PhD in Nursing or a DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) after you have earned your master’s degree.
It is good to note that you must be licensed by the relevant boards in order for you to become a practicing nurse. There are also some nursing certifications that you might be required to get. It is worth mentioning that such certifications are in most cases not mandatory. They however give one an added advantage when seeking for employment or for a promotion. The bottom line is that nursing career is an exciting one especially to those people who are passionate about taking care of the sick in the society.
