Introduction to Psychology: PSY 101
Research Paper Instructions
BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL: The biopsychosocial approach is an approach that discusses
health and illness as a dynamic interaction between an individual’s biology (physiology),
psychology, and other associated social factors.
When discussing Mental Disorders, all of these components must be considered. In
other words, an individual who is being assessed or treated for a mental disorder will be
given evaluative measures that examine the biological, psychological, and social
aspects of the disorder.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DMS 5) is the newest
edition of the ‘bible’ that mental health professionals use to diagnose mental disorders
(see pdf copy in module folder, or visit the campus library to look at a paper copy).

Introduction to Psychology: PSY 101
Research Paper Instructions
Writing Instructions:
For this assignment you will need to choose a mental disorder from the DSM-5 and
write a 1500-1750 word research paper (deductions will be taken for being under/over
the word count, title page, abstract, and references are not included in the word count).
The paper must be comprehensive, and must include information from all areas of the
biopsychosocial approach.
Requirements:
1. You may not write in first person, and you should not ask questions in your
paper, rather you should make statements.
For example, you may think that it is a good idea to ask a question, such as:
Have you ever wondered why people have mental disorders?
Please do not do this, instead you should make statements, like this:
The biopsychosocial model is a comprehensive approach utilized in mental health
settings to examine the etiological factors of mental disorders.
2. Typed, double spaced, Times New Roman font 12 point, 1 inch margins
3. Title page, abstract, body of paper, and references page, in other words all APA
formatting standards must be followed. I have provided several resources for you
about writing in APA format.
4. 1500-1750 words, this count is ONLY for the body of the paper and does not
include the title page, abstract, citations, or references, i.e., only the body of the
paper counts toward the word count.
5. You must include three additional sources in your paper, two of them must be
peer review journal articles found in the Mohave.edu library database (see the
Library database ppt.) and the other one should be the DSM-5. You must also
cite other sources that you use, but website information and sources like WebMD
and Wikipedia are not permitted.
6. The paper will be turned in to a Turnitin Dropbox. You must be under 10%
similarity on the final submission. The dropbox will open early and you can
submit and make corrections to your paper as many times as you would like
before the final due date, and only the last submission will be graded. The
dropbox will close on the due date and late submissions will not be accepted.
