Medical Psychology is the application of psychological principles to the medical practice which is primarily drug oriented in the cases of mental illness, substance abuse, emotional, cognitive’ and behavioral disorders. Mental disorder as an aspect of MP is manifested by breakdowns in the adaptation processes characterized by abnormalities of behavior, thoughts, and feeling where each contributes to distress and, or impairment of normal functioning. Behavioral Disorder is characterized by the inability of one to keep up with healthy interpersonal relationships with other people. Emotional illness is characterized by irrational and uncontrollable fear, an extreme tendency to hostility, and persistent feelings of anxiety. Medical Psychology also deals with substance abuse disorder where its concern is in clinically repairing the distress and impairment caused by the abuse (Wikipedia, 2017).
Medical Psychology is therefore significant in maintaining the physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral health of the society. The discipline can be used in the cases of political and social distress to solve problems and promote the general well-being of the society. Terrorism is an act of crime and violence which causes traumatic experiences to those who experience it. Instances of rape and excessive violence during acts of terrorism causes depression which further leads to adverse health effects including suicidal attempts. Medical Psychology plays a key role in such a situation through incorporating therapy and administration of medicine to instill normalcy in the individuals and to the community in general. High rates of unemployment causes frustration among people on the government of the day causing a feeling of despair and depression, MP can be applied to reduce the self-blame associated with those affected (Pinkney, 2015).
Psychology of oppression only focuses on the psychological impairments caused by social oppression where it views the society as being oppressive and at the same time looks at underlying factors in people that contribute to their feeling of oppression (Ratner, 2014). This differentiates it from the socio-political impacts of MP, in that it does not look into the political factors affecting individuals but rather the social factors alone.
