Topic of Interest:
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) Schmidt, M. J., Wessling, E. G., McPhaul, K., London, M., & Lipscomb, J. (2019). Workplace violence in health care: An overview and practical approach for prevention. Psychiatric Annals, 49(11), 482- 486. doi:http://dx.doi.org.ezp.waldenulibrary.org/10.3928/00485713- 20191010-01
Professional Practice Use:
One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article One of the dangers facing healthcare workers at workplaces is workplace violence. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate the rate of workplace safety is deteriorating. For instance, the bureau indicates that healthcare workers can spend 13 percent of their time away from work due to workplace violence. The article can be used to learn about the dangers and prevention method. The information creates awareness for the stakeholders to take action.
Research Analysis Matrix
Add more rows if necessary Strengths of the Research Limitations of the Research Relevancy to Topic of Interest Notes
The study provides an in-depth view of the workplace violence.
It is difficult to establish the independent and dependent variables from the descriptive study. The topic is relevant due to the increasing cases of workplace violence. The study describes workplace violence and provides critical information about the topic.
The study forms the basis of research questions that can inspire further investigation of the topic. Human behavior is likely to improve upon realization of surveillance. The change of behavior affects outcomes. The study deals with the real issues of workplace violence.
The research is a fertile ground for developing a relevant hypothesis.
Participants of the study are likely to give opinions from personal experiences and not the real dynamic of workplace violence.
The researcher has an opportunity to collect firsthand information from the participants through observation of behavior.
The participants are at risk of giving biased judgment of workplace violence.
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
Craft a summary (2-3 paragraph) below that includes the following:
• Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research
• Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research
• Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research
The approach of identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research is finding articles that have been published in recognized journals. Some of the recognized journals include American Journal of Nursing (AJN) and the Journal of Professional Nursing (JPN). The article should meet a basic requirement of peer-review. Peer-reviewed research involves research that undergoes the review of peers before it is published. Another requirement is that the studies should be systematic reviews, control trials, and randomized control trials. One of the strategy of identifying peer-reviewed journal is filtering the search tools to get the peer-reviewed scholarly articles.
Some of the resources I intend to use to find peer-reviewed research is identifying specific journals for deriving the articles. For instance, Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) is a resources for nurses. Psychiatry Journal is for identifying articles, article reviews, and clinical studies on psychiatry research and practice. The articles are scholarly journals which are reliable, accurate, factual, and organized research findings. Another resource is American Psychiatric Association which published evidence-based articles that can be used to enhance nurse practice and provide latest information on different topics.
The process of identifying peer-review articles and how scholars develop peer-reviewed articles is illustrated as follows;
Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.
The results of my efforts are below.
Directions: Complete Step 1 by writing 2-3 paragraphs in the space below comparing the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration – to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
My first nursing specialty is to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner but the second preference is Family Nurse Practitioner. The role of PMHNP is to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with mental illnesses. PMHNP work with diverse patients suffering from mood disorders, anxiety disorders, issues of substance and drug abuse, and mental health issues resulting from advanced age such as dementia. PMHNP work as a team or alone to deliver quality care to patients. Treatment involves individualized plans or group therapy. PMHNP can work in hospitals, home, prisons, psychiatric hospitals, and outpatient mental health centers.
The second preference is the role of a family nurse practitioner which involves working with children and adults to enhance health and wellness. The focus of family nurse practitioner is preventive care. A family nurse practitioner works under supervision of a physician, but some states allow independent practice. FNP works in family clinics and underserved populations.
Complete Step 2 by writing a paragraph identifying and justifying your reasons for choosing your MSN specialization. Be sure to incorporate any feedback you received from colleagues in this week’s Discussion Forum.
The reasons for choosing my PMHNP specialization is my interest to understand the causes of mental health and diverse treatment methods. My cousin was diagnosed with depression and substance abuse addiction. I developed the interest to understand how to make people better emotionally. I desired to help people get better and overcome mental illnesses and function normally. It was obvious that my calling was in healthcare, and specifically mental health. During my initial encounter with psychiatrists and therapists, I realized how they were enjoying their work and transforming lives.
Complete Step 3 by examining and identifying one professional organization related to your selected or preferred specialty. Explain how you can become a member of this organization.
The selected professional organization is American Psychiatric Nurses Association. I can become a member of the organization by filling membership forms for regular membership. The regular membership involves submitting details of the nurse registration, paying the dues, and engaging the efforts that support the goals of the association. Members can join online or making a call.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties

Treatment involves developing individualized plans such as counseling The focus is on preventative care.
PMHNP can work independently depending on state laws FNP work under supervision but some states allow less supervision due to shortage of staff.
PMHNP work in prisons, mental health facilities, psychiatric hospitals, and schools. FNP work in clinics and less privileged communities.
Treatment involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Encounter with a patient involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
PMHNP work with children and adults FNP work with children and adults

Discussion Guide for the Paper:
This is an academic and professional success plan for a nursing student. The student has selected psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) as their preferred nursing specialty and is comparing it to family nurse practitioner (FNP) as a second choice. They outline key differentiators between the roles including that PMHNPs treat mental health issues through counseling and therapy while FNPs focus more on preventative care (Jamieson & Howard, 2019). They highlight reasons for choosing PMHNP including a personal interest in mental health and desire to help people overcome issues like depression (Milton, 2019).
The student also analyzes a research article on workplace violence in healthcare, assessing its strengths, limitations, and relevance to their topic of interest. Key points include that the article provides an in-depth overview of the issue but has limitations around establishing clear independent/dependent variables due to its descriptive nature (Schmidt et al., 2019). The student reflects on how the research could be used to develop hypotheses or research questions for further study. Overall, the text shows critical analysis of research and rationale for the student’s preferred nursing specialization.
