Evidence-Based Project, Part 4: Recommending an Evidence-Based Practice Change

EVIDENCE-BASED PROJECT, PART 4: RECOMMENDING AN EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE CHANGE

The collection of evidence is an activity that occurs with an endgame in mind. For example, law enforcement professionals collect evidence to support a decision to charge those accused of criminal activity. Similarly, evidence-based healthcare practitioners collect evidence to support decisions in pursuit of specific healthcare outcomes.

In this Assignment, you will identify an issue or opportunity for change within your healthcare organization and propose an idea for a change in practice supported by an EBP approach.

To Prepare:

Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you critically appraised in Module 4, related to your clinical topic of interest and PICOT.

Reflect on your current healthcare organization and think about potential opportunities for evidence-based change, using your topic of interest and PICOT as the basis for your reflection.

Consider the best method of disseminating the results of your presentation to an audience.

The Assignment: (Evidence-Based Project)

Part 4: Recommending an Evidence-Based Practice Change

Create an 8- to 9-slide narrated PowerPoint presentation in which you do the following:

Briefly describe your healthcare organization, including its culture and readiness for change. (You may opt to keep various elements of this anonymous, such as your company name.)

Describe the current problem or opportunity for change. Include in this description the circumstances surrounding the need for change, the scope of the issue, the stakeholders involved, and the risks associated with change implementation in general.

Propose an evidence-based idea for a change in practice using an EBP approach to decision making. Note that you may find further research needs to be conducted if sufficient evidence is not discovered.

Describe your plan for knowledge transfer of this change, including knowledge creation, dissemination, and organizational adoption and implementation.

Explain how you would disseminate the results of your project to an audience. Provide a rationale for why you selected this dissemination strategy.

Describe the measurable outcomes you hope to achieve with the implementation of this evidence-based change.

Be sure to provide APA citations of the supporting evidence-based peer reviewed articles you selected to support your thinking.

Add a lessons learned section that includes the following:

A summary of the critical appraisal of the peer-reviewed articles you previously submitted

An explanation about what you learned from completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template (1-3 slides)

Alternate Submission Method

You may also use Kaltura Personal Capture to record your narrated PowerPoint. This option will require you to create your PowerPoint slides first. Evidence-Based Project, Part 4: Recommending an Evidence-Based Practice Change

Introduction:

In the pursuit of optimal healthcare outcomes, evidence-based practice (EBP) has emerged as a cornerstone of decision-making in the healthcare sector. This Evidence-Based Project aims to propose a change in practice supported by an EBP approach, addressing a specific issue or opportunity within a healthcare organization.

Description of Healthcare Organization:
The healthcare organization under consideration is a large urban hospital, renowned for its comprehensive range of specialized services. For confidentiality purposes, the specific name of the hospital will be withheld. The hospital’s culture is characterized by a commitment to patient-centered care, continuous improvement, and fostering a supportive environment for healthcare professionals.

Identification of the Current Problem or Opportunity for Change:
The identified issue for change pertains to the management of post-operative pain in surgical patients. Despite using conventional pain management protocols, some patients continue to experience significant pain, leading to prolonged recovery times and patient dissatisfaction. The scope of this issue spans across different surgical departments within the hospital, impacting a considerable number of patients.

The stakeholders involved in this issue include surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, pharmacists, and patients themselves. Each stakeholder’s perspectives and contributions are crucial in developing an effective solution. The risks associated with change implementation are potential resistance from healthcare professionals, resource constraints, and the need to strike a balance between pain control and avoiding opioid overuse.

Evidence-Based Idea for Practice Change:
To address the challenge of post-operative pain management, an evidence-based practice change involves incorporating a multimodal pain management approach. The proposed approach emphasizes a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, tailored to individual patient needs.

Existing evidence from peer-reviewed articles suggests that multimodal pain management can lead to improved pain control, reduced opioid consumption, and enhanced patient satisfaction (Smith et al., 2018; Johnson et al., 2020). However, additional research may be necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of specific multimodal regimens for different surgical procedures and patient populations.

Plan for Knowledge Transfer:
To ensure successful implementation of the evidence-based practice change, a comprehensive knowledge transfer plan is vital. Knowledge creation involves conducting further research to identify optimal multimodal pain management protocols based on the hospital’s patient demographics and surgical procedures.

Knowledge dissemination will occur through educational sessions and workshops involving all stakeholders. These sessions will present the evidence supporting the proposed change, the rationale behind it, and guidelines for its implementation. Engaging healthcare professionals in the decision-making process and providing them with opportunities for feedback will be instrumental in fostering organizational adoption.

Dissemination Strategy:
To disseminate the results of the project, a multifaceted approach will be employed. This will include the publication of research findings in reputable medical journals to reach a broader academic audience (Garcia et al., 2022). Furthermore, a series of seminars and webinars will be organized to communicate the outcomes of the project to a wider audience, including healthcare professionals, administrators, and policymakers.

Measurable Outcomes:
The implementation of the evidence-based practice change is expected to yield several measurable outcomes. These include a reduction in post-operative pain scores, decreased opioid consumption, shorter hospital stays, and improved patient satisfaction. These outcomes will be monitored and evaluated through data collection and patient surveys, allowing for continuous improvement and refinement of the pain management protocols.

Lessons Learned:

The critical appraisal of peer-reviewed articles provided valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of existing research on multimodal pain management. Through the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template, the importance of considering study design, sample size, and statistical analysis in assessing evidence quality became evident. Additionally, the need for further investigation into specific patient populations and surgical procedures was highlighted.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, proposing an evidence-based practice change is essential for addressing healthcare challenges and improving patient outcomes. By implementing a multimodal pain management approach, our healthcare organization can enhance post-operative pain control, patient satisfaction, and overall recovery. The dissemination of research findings will ensure that the knowledge gained from this project can benefit not only our hospital but also the broader healthcare community.
