Introduction:
In this paper, I will add a new section to the page paper submitted in Module 1, which will address the impact of competing needs on the selected healthcare issue/stressor. I will also describe a relevant policy or practice in the organization that may influence the healthcare issue/stressor, critique the policy for ethical considerations, and recommend policy or practice changes to balance competing needs and ethical considerations.
Competing Needs Impacting the Healthcare Issue/Stressor:
The healthcare issue/stressor I selected for my Module 1 assignment is the need for access to healthcare and a lack of providers. The two competing needs that impact this healthcare issue/stressor are:
The need for quality healthcare services: Patients require quality healthcare services that are accessible and affordable. Patients need to have access to medical professionals who can provide timely and efficient healthcare services.
The need for adequate compensation and benefits: Healthcare professionals require adequate compensation and benefits for their services. Healthcare professionals need to be compensated fairly for their work, which can influence their willingness to provide healthcare services in underserved areas.
Relevant Policy or Practice in the Organization:
One relevant policy or practice in my organization that may influence the healthcare issue/stressor is a loan forgiveness program for healthcare professionals who work in underserved areas. The program offers student loan repayment assistance to healthcare professionals who work in underserved areas for a specific period. This policy aims to incentivize healthcare professionals to provide services in underserved areas and promote access to healthcare.
Critique of the Policy for Ethical Considerations:
The policy’s strength lies in promoting access to healthcare in underserved areas by incentivizing healthcare professionals to work in these areas. However, the policy may have ethical shortcomings in that it does not address the root cause of the healthcare issue/stressor, which is the lack of providers. The policy may also lead to healthcare professionals providing substandard healthcare services to meet the program’s requirements.
Recommendations for Policy or Practice Changes:
To balance the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients and address ethical shortcomings, I recommend the following policy changes:
Increase funding for medical education programs that target underserved areas. The policy will increase the number of healthcare professionals in underserved areas and address the root cause of the healthcare issue/stressor.
Implement a mentorship program for healthcare professionals who work in underserved areas. The policy will provide guidance and support to healthcare professionals to improve the quality of healthcare services provided in underserved areas.
Evidence to Support Policy or Practice Recommendations:
Two evidence-based scholarly resources that support my policy recommendations are:
Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on the
Future of Rural Health Care. (2005). Quality through collaboration: The future of rural health. National Academies Press (US).
This resource discusses the need for collaboration between healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities to improve the quality of healthcare services in rural areas. It emphasizes the importance of providing incentives for healthcare providers to work in rural areas and increasing funding for medical education programs that target rural areas.
Fogarty, L. A., Curbow, B. A., Wingard, J. R., McDonnell, K., Somerfield, M. R., & Wingard, D. L. (2002). Can 40 seconds of compassion reduce patient anxiety? Journal of clinical oncology, 20(4), 933-938.
This resource discusses the importance of empathy and compassion in healthcare and how it can positively impact patient outcomes. It highlights the need for mentorship programs to support healthcare professionals in providing compassionate care.
The need for access to healthcare and a lack of providers is a significant healthcare issue/stressor. Balancing the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients while addressing ethical considerations is crucial in developing policies and practices that promote access to quality healthcare services. The recommended policy changes of increasing funding for medical education programs that target underserved areas and implementing a mentorship program for healthcare professionals who work in underserved areas aim to address the root cause of the healthcare issue/stressor and promote access to quality healthcare services.
