The advanced practice nurse (APN) has a critical role in improving the health of young adults through preventive screening and intervention.
Preventive Screening
Preventive screening is critical for identifying health risks early in young adults. APNs can help in promoting early detection and early intervention of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. For instance, a recent study shows that APNs can improve the adherence and management of hypertension among young adults by providing regular follow-up, counseling, and education on lifestyle modifications (Stolldorf et al., 2020). Similarly, APNs can screen young adults for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, through physical examinations, urine and blood tests, and patient history.
