Carl Rogers Self-Concept in Personality Theory
Personality can be defined as the qualities or characteristics if an individual that brings about distinctive character of such an individual (Crowne, 2014). Through research in the field of psychology, it has been established that there are various factors that influence an individual’s personality. Carl Rogers, a psychologist in trying to understand how personality of an individual comes up with a personality theory that provides that the notion of self or self-concept as important in development of an individual’s personality.
There are various reasons why Carl Rogers personality theory is valid. One is that for people to “grow”, they always need an environment that provides them with genuineness to actualize their wishes, goals, and desires (Menne, 2013). Therefore, if the conditions that one requires are provides to him or her, such people tend to develop relationships and healthy personalities. This is because when people achieve their goals or wishes they tend to live happy and content lives that brings about healthy personalities.
Another reason is the fact that when self-actualization takes place individuals are able to attain the status of a “fully functioning person”. These are people who are in touch whatever they have achieve at the point at which they have achieved it. This is not the end of life journey as new goals keep on coming when old ones are achieved. This is a process of always becoming and changing. This process is what brings about personality development.
The accuracy of the theory is that individuals always strive to experience, feel and behave in ways that are consistent with their self-image, that is one that provides a reflection of what such an individual would like, our ideal-self (Vetter, 2012). This means that there are concepts that are unique to every individual. This is because every individual has a self-image that is totally different from the others. Humanistic approach provides that the uniqueness of each individual’s self-image is what brings about personality development. In conclusion, the self-concept of Carl Rogers is valid and accurate in regards to personality development.
