Please read through all of the instructions before you begin. This assignment is divided into two parts
and is to be completed individually.
Purpose:
To provide the student with an opportunity to explore health concerns experienced by a maternal
client. The student will apply the nursing metaparadigm to assess a maternal client and fetus to
identify health priorities that require in-depth teaching.
You will be assessed on how you apply an understanding of the following general learning outcomes:
 Integrate the nursing metaparadigm, nursing theory, and related knowledge to maternity
nursing.
 Apply principles of teaching and learning and health promotion to the maternity client and the
family.
 Relate cultural competency to maternity nursing.
 Incorporate research findings in evidence-informed practice in the delivery of maternity nursing
care
Instructions:
Part 1 – Perinatal Educational Plan Assessment (5%)
1. Read through all four case studies provided in this assignment. They are located on the last page
of this document. Choose one of the following case studies:
a. Emma
b. Melissa
c. Courtney
d. Oksana
2. Use the Perinatal Teaching Plan chart, provided in Moodle, as part of this assignment package.
Use the information from your chosen case study and complete the Perinatal Teaching Plan
chart. Identify the following areas:
a. Stage of growth and development of the woman based on a developmental theory
(Erickson or Piaget-PSYC 1060)
b. Identify the assessment data/information (based on the nursing metaparadigm) from
the case study that can be utilized to help you identify the educational needs of the
client. If you feel there is no information for parts of the metaparadigm briefly indicate
what information you need to know
c. Identify 3 health learning needs based on the scenario and assessment data. From these
identify one as being the priority
d. Homework help – Write one goal for the priority health learning need. A goal is a broad statement of what
the teaching plan should accomplish.
3. The information provided on the teaching care plan must be typewritten and well organized in
the appropriate sections.

Part 2 – Writing a Scholarly Paper (15%)
1. Take your #1 priority health learning need from section D on the Perinatal Teaching Plan chart
(part 1) and write a scholarly paper outlining each of the following focus areas (using literature
to support your ideas throughout the paper):
a. Introduction indicating what your paper is about
b. A brief comprehensive description of the priority health concern
c. Educational content for the priority health concern. Consider the following areas:
i. Effects the health concern will have on the mom
ii. Effects the health concern will have on the fetus/newborn
iii. Potential concerns that need to be considered
d. Conclusion summarizing what your paper is about
2. Your scholarly paper must include the following criteria:
a. Maximum 4 pages, not including the title page and reference page
b. Introduction
c. Body of paper includes the:
i. description of the concern
ii. effects the health concern has on the mom
iii. effects on the fetus/newborn
iv. potential concerns that need to be considered
d. Conclusion
e. Outside sources and references to support your ideas (this literature support is included
throughout the paper)
f. Help write my thesis – APA formatting
Submission requirements:
 All parts of this assignment must be typewritten, well-organized and utilize proper writing
conventions (see rubric).
 Part 1 and Part 2 assignments must be submitted as a single word document, no
PDF’s, google docs or Mac pages will be accepted.
 Submit document to the Assignment 1 drop box in Moodle.
 Use the following file submissions in the Moodle drop box:

Assessment:
You will be assessed using the assignment rubric created as part of this assignment package. The
rubrics are located as PDF files in the assignment drop box. Feedback about your assignment will be
provided in Moodle gradebook. The instructor has 10 business days to complete marking. All grades will
be posted in Moodle gradebook.

Case Studies
Case Study: Courtney
Courtney is 34 years old and has come alone to the clinic for her prenatal check-up. She is 26 weeks
pregnant, and is a gravida 3, para 0 (2 spontaneous abortions). Courtney is wearing heavy makeup and
has dark circles under her eyes, she informs the nurse that she has left her abusive husband and is
staying at a woman’s shelter. The nurse notes that Courtney does not make eye contact and has lost
weight since her last check-up. During the assessment, the nurse notices finger marks on her right arm
and bruises on her abdomen. Courtney is crying and expresses concern about the health of her baby
and wants to hear the heartbeat.
Case Study: Oksana
Oksana is 39 years old, and 24 weeks pregnant. Oksana has recently immigrated to Canada with her
husband from Nigeria. She has been married for two years and this is her first pregnancy. Her husband
accompanies her to all her prenatal visits, and he is very excited about her pregnancy. She has come to
her prenatal appointment with complaints of a headache and puffiness in her hands. She states that she
is worried that stress in her job will have a negative effect on the baby. Her job requires that she travels
a lot and eat out with clients. During the assessment, the nurse notes the following: blood pressure
142/90, pulse 80, respiration 16, urine protein +1.
Case Study: Emma
Emma is 29 years old and is being seen for a 2-week follow-up post vaginal delivery. Emma gave birth to
a healthy 7-pound daughter. Emma was adopted and does not know her family history; she is living with
her partner Sharon. She is complaining of increased vaginal bleeding. She reports that the bleeding
began on the fourth day after delivery and has increased in severity each subsequent day. Emma has
taken Ibuprofen daily since delivery and states she has a history of iron deficient anemia due to
menorrhagia.
Case Study: Melissa
Melissa is 21-years-old living with her partner, James on a limited income. Melissa went into
spontaneous labor at 38 weeks gestation with rupture of amniotic membranes. During her labor and
delivery, the fetus was monitored internally. After 14 hours of labor she underwent a non-scheduled
cesarean delivery. She gave birth to a healthy 6-pound baby boy. She was discharged from hospital day
3 postpartum and is currently being seen by the nurse for her postpartum home visit. Melissa is
complaining of pain in the pelvic area, chills, and loss of appetite. When questioned by the nurse,
Melissa mentions that her discharge has a foul odor.
