Abstract:
Objective: To summarise the recent evidence on physical activity and health and to provide recommendations on the promotion of physical activity for health benefits.
Methods: A review of the literature and data from surveys of physical activity levels among Australians and of interventions designed to increase physical activity.
Results: Physical activity reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. Physical inactivity causes as many deaths in Australia as smoking. Most Australians are insufficiently active for health benefits. There is evidence for effective interventions to increase physical activity at the individual and population levels.
Conclusions: Physical activity should be promoted to the general public as an important means of reducing chronic disease risk. The challenge for health promotion is to promote population-wide increases in physical activity in the face of environmental and social factors that discourage it.
