Correctional Misconduct
Correctional personnel are confronted with different ethical considerations that they need to observe in ensuring that they effectively and efficiently meet their duties and responsibilities. The operations and activities in correctional facilities are sensitive, and thus they need to be backed with ethical based policies and considerations. Ethical considerations enable the correctional staff to make the right decisions. The correctional personnel are faced with different ethical considerations that determine their levels of effectiveness and efficiency in delivering to duties and responsibilities attached to their different positions.
Correctional corruption is an ethical consideration issue where the correctional staff uses their position to unjustly and unfairly benefit socially and financially at the expense of the common good. The correctional facilities have defined prohibition concerning the conduct of employees and the inmates (Azemi, 2019). Nevertheless, the correctional officers get bribes from prisoners, thus relaxing the prohibition. Corruption leads to officers sneaking contraband, enhancing the escaping of inmates, or taking inmates to unauthorized.
Correctional personnel faces correctional violence between inmates and inmates or inmates and correctional staff, thus negatively affecting the operations in correctional facilities. Correctional violence is characterized by rape, gang rape, gang violence, and excessive for officers (Pollahne, 2013). The prison conditions such as insufficient staff training, overcrowding, insecure facilities, mistreatment of prisoners, and a culture of disrespect result in increased violence that overwhelms prison authorities, thus negatively affecting the operation of correctional staff.
Overcrowding is an ethical issue that affects the correctional staff and the prisoners, thus making the correctional facilities unbearable. Overcrowding entails the correctional facilities having more prisoners than their capacity resulting in chaos (Pollahne, 2013). The crowded prison facilities lead to increased stress, racial tension, and inmate on inmate assaults. In overcrowded prisons, the staff level and resources are below the minimum leading to unfair completion between the parties involved. The overcrowded correctional facilities overwhelm the correctional personnel, thus making their operation hard and impossible.
Conclusion
Correctional ethical issues are a disadvantage to the correctional personnel and the inmates since they act as barriers to delivering the different duties and responsibilities within the criminal justice system. The ethical issues work against the goals and objectives of the criminal justice system.
