Practicum Experience
Practicum Experience
Nursing Theory
The selected nursing theory is quality improvement theory. The quality improvement framework focuses on constantly improving the delivery of care to patients. The purpose of quality improvement is to enhance the quality of outcomes (Flynn et al., 2017). It is effective in a performance management system, especially in three critical areas, including outcomes, policies, and programs (Flynn et al., 2017). Quality improvement theory helps various health practitioners to focus on the quality of health services they offer to the patients.
One of the benefits of adopting the approach is to boost the readiness for change and change competencies, thus eliminating clinical variation. Another benefit of the framework is to improve the systematic data approach (Flynn et al., 2017). The data-driven approach lowers the length of stay in hospitals and improves the speed of recovery. During the practicum, it was essential to ask whether different efforts were geared towards improving the quality of care (Zhou et al., 2017). It was also an eye-opener to the various areas in healthcare that require improvements. The benefit of involving different personnel was also crucial in personal growth in the healthcare sector.
Goals and Objectives
Practicum is an opportunity to synthesize, integrate, and apply practical skills to care delivery among diverse patients. The goal of the practicum was to enhance evidence-based practice (Zhou et al., 2017). During the practicum experience, it was important to emphasize that reliable data should drive all decisions. Systematic decisions are effective for both healthcare workers and patients. Another goal is to rely on professional ethics to make decisions about patients’ health (Evans‐Agnew et al., 2017). It was also important to utilize the knowledge to make the best decisions concerning the patients’ health.
While developing the goals and objectives during the practicum, the seven areas were in mind. The different areas include scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice injury, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics and independent practice. For example, a scientific foundation was important in ensuring all the decisions are backed by data (Ikonomopoulos et al., 2016). It was also crucial to ensure that all the decisions are ethical and acceptable according to the ethical code of conduct. Other considerations include improving my skills in leadership since it is an essential component of the healthcare system. One of the preferences is to boost life-long education to enhance leadership skills. Another essential component of the goals and objectives is technology and information literacy. I was interested in telehealth medicine since I believe more healthcare facilities will embrace it in the future.
Meeting the Timeline
During the practicum experience, I did meet some of the goals and objectives while others were not met. The experience is a great lesson of future practicum experiences. For instance, one of the goals I met is learning evidence-based strategies and how to embrace it in practice. I learned that healthcare practitioners should acquire the best and current knowledge. Another goal I met was observing ethical behavior in all the professional dealings. I also read the code of conduct regularly to ensure I understand how to respond to different situations. However, one of the goals I did not achieve is sharpening my skills in telehealth. In the next practicum, I will find a professional who has been using the technology for further orientation.
