Topic: The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)

It is not enough to simply advocate for your patients in the hospital or patient setting. As leaders, nurses must step out of their comfort zone and take an active role in the political process.

Topic: The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)
Summary:
The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) is a topic of great importance in nursing advocacy. The NLC is a mutual recognition model for nursing licensure that allows registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) to have a single license to practice in multiple states. Currently, there are 38 states that have joined the NLC, with the goal of enhancing access to care and facilitating nursing mobility across state lines. Nurses who hold a multistate license can practice in their home state and any other compact state without having to obtain additional licenses.
Importance and Implications:
The NLC is crucial for addressing the challenges faced by nurses in a mobile healthcare workforce. It enables nurses to provide care more effectively, particularly in times of emergencies or when there is a need for rapid response across state borders. By streamlining the licensing process, the NLC reduces administrative burden and increases efficiency, ultimately benefiting both nurses and patients. Moreover, it supports the delivery of telehealth services across state lines, enabling nurses to provide virtual care to patients residing in different states.
If the NLC is enacted, it would lead to increased workforce mobility, improved access to healthcare, and enhanced patient outcomes. Nurses would have more opportunities to pursue employment in other states without the hassle of obtaining additional licenses, thus expanding their career options. Patients in underserved areas or during times of crisis would benefit from an increased availability of qualified nurses who can quickly respond to their needs.
Ways to Get Involved:
Contact legislators: Write letters, make phone calls, or send emails to state and federal legislators expressing support for the NLC. Explain the benefits of the compact in terms of patient care, workforce mobility, and access to healthcare.
Join nursing organizations: Join professional nursing organizations that advocate for the NLC and contribute to their efforts. These organizations often have grassroots initiatives, provide resources, and organize events to raise awareness and promote the compact.
By actively engaging in these actions, nurses can make their voices heard and contribute to the passage and implementation of the NLC, ultimately improving nursing practice and patient care on a national scale.
