Insight 1: According to the article by Duggan et al. (2015), leaders who implement evidence-based practices (EBPs) are more likely to create healthy work environments. The study showed that when leaders actively promote and support the implementation of EBPs, staff engagement and morale increases, and turnover rates decrease. Additionally, effective leaders who use EBPs can improve patient outcomes and overall organizational performance.
A leader who I have seen use this behavior is a nurse manager who implemented a new evidence-based practice in our unit. She engaged the staff in the decision-making process and provided training and support throughout the implementation. As a result, the staff felt more empowered and invested in the success of the new practice, which led to improved patient outcomes and increased job satisfaction.
Insight 2: Another key insight from the readings is that effective communication and collaboration are essential leadership behaviors for creating healthy work environments. In chapter 6 of Broome and Marshall’s (2021) book, they emphasize the importance of building relationships, communicating effectively, and collaborating with others to achieve common goals. These behaviors can promote trust, respect, and teamwork, which are
critical for creating a positive work culture and improving patient outcomes.
A leader whom I have seen use these behaviors is a nursing director who led a multidisciplinary team in developing and implementing a new patient care model. She encouraged open communication and collaboration among team members, which led to the identification and resolution of potential issues before they could affect patient care. Her leadership style fostered a culture of trust and respect, which in turn improved job satisfaction and reduced turnover rates among the staff.
Overall, the effective use of evidence-based practices and communication and collaboration skills by leaders can have a significant impact on creating healthy work environments, improving staff morale and engagement, and ultimately improving patient outcomes. The examples I provided demonstrate how these behaviors can be effective in practice and their impact on the workplace.
