Additionally, healthcare organizations are adopting the Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking to monitor and manage their medical equipment and supplies more efficiently (Peterson, Adams, & DeMuro, 2015). Another trend is the use of expert systems and artificial intelligence to provide decision-making support to healthcare professionals (Halm, 2018).
While these technological trends have the potential to revolutionize healthcare, they also pose potential challenges and risks. For instance, data safety is a significant concern when it comes to the use of digital technologies in healthcare. Data breaches can occur, resulting in the exposure of sensitive patient information (Bosse et al., 2017). Additionally, there is a risk that healthcare professionals may become too reliant on the technology, leading to a decline in critical thinking skills and clinical judgment (Neff et al., 2018).
Despite the risks associated with these technological trends, they also offer significant benefits. For instance, the use of mobile health applications and telehealth can improve patient access to healthcare and promote self-management of chronic conditions (Milstead & Short, 2019). Moreover, expert systems and artificial intelligence can provide healthcare professionals with decision-making support, leading to more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans (Halm, 2018).
Of all the healthcare technology trends, the most promising for impacting nursing practice is the use of mobile health applications and telehealth. These technologies can improve patient care outcomes by enhancing patient access to healthcare, promoting self-management of chronic conditions, and reducing the burden on healthcare professionals (Peterson, Adams, & DeMuro, 2015). For example, telehealth can be used to monitor patients remotely, reducing hospital readmissions and improving patient outcomes (Milstead & Short, 2019). Moreover, mobile health applications can provide patients with real-time health information, allowing them to make informed decisions about their health (Peterson, Adams, & DeMuro, 2015).
In conclusion, healthcare information technology is continuously evolving, and healthcare organizations must keep up with these trends to improve patient care outcomes, efficiencies, and data management. While these technologies pose potential challenges and risks, they also offer significant benefits, and the use of mobile health applications and telehealth is the most promising for impacting nursing practice.
