Engaging students in listening and speaking activities can include debates, discussions, presentations, and persuasive writing. All of these components are crucial to expanding students’ growth in communication skills.
Part 1: Listening, Speaking and Writing Activities
Use the “Listening, Speaking, and Writing Activities” template and “Class Profile” to complete this assignment.
Using the same grade level you selected for your previous lesson plans or from your field experiences, select a state standard that focuses on listening, writing, and speaking skills to develop three listening, speaking, and writing activities.
Below are examples of possible activities:
Persuasive writing, speech writing, debates, class discussions, presentations on topics of student interest, persuasive advertisement, or advertisement campaign
Your learning activities should be appropriate for students detailed within the “Class Profile” and include the following:
Strategies that encourage students to apply personal opinions toward the interpretation of texts
Various forms of communication (verbal, nonverbal, media, etc.) techniques to foster elementary students’ active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction
Accommodations related to assessment and testing conditions to meet diverse needs of students
Part 2: Rationale
In 250-500 words, rationalize your instructional choices explaining why the activities chosen are appropriate for all ”Class Profile” students and clearly focuses on creativity and student engagement. In addition, explain the elements of effective speaking. Additionally, discuss how verbal and nonverbal communication affects the persuasive aspect of having students advertise and/or present an idea.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Part 1: Listening, Speaking, and Writing Activities
Activity 1: Show and Tell
Objective: Develop listening, speaking, and writing skills by encouraging students to share information about an item of personal significance.
Instructions:
Ask each student to bring an item from home that is special to them.
Provide a designated time for students to present their items to the class.
Encourage students to describe their item using descriptive words and complete sentences.
After each presentation, facilitate a brief class discussion by asking students questions about the presented item.
As a follow-up writing activity, have students write a short paragraph about their item, using appropriate vocabulary and sentence structure.
Activity 2: Picture Storytelling
Objective: Enhance listening, speaking, and writing skills through storytelling and creative expression.
Instructions:
Select a series of colorful and engaging pictures that depict a sequence of events.
Display the pictures to the class, one at a time, and ask students to describe what they see and predict what might happen next.
Guide the students in collectively creating a story based on the pictures.
Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a set of the pictures.
In their groups, students take turns telling the story using the pictures as prompts.
As a writing activity, ask students to draw their favorite scene from the story and write a sentence or two describing it.
Activity 3: Persuasive Advertisement
Objective: Develop persuasive speaking and writing skills by having students create and present their own advertisements.
Instructions:
Discuss the concept of advertisements with the students, highlighting the purpose of persuasion and the use of visual and verbal techniques.
Choose a product or service that would be of interest to kindergarten students (e.g., a new toy, a healthy snack, etc.).
In small groups, have students brainstorm ideas and features of their chosen product or service.
Ask each group to create a short advertisement, using visual aids and persuasive language to convince their classmates to buy or use the product.
Provide time for each group to present their advertisements to the class, encouraging clear and confident speaking.
As a writing activity, have students write a persuasive paragraph explaining why their product or service is the best choice.
Part 2: Rationale
In developing these activities, the focus is on promoting creativity and student engagement while targeting the listening, speaking, and writing skills outlined in the Georgia Kindergarten Standards.
For the “Show and Tell” activity, students have the opportunity to share personal experiences, develop vocabulary, and practice speaking in front of their peers. The follow-up writing activity allows them to reinforce their understanding and apply their knowledge in a written form.
The “Picture Storytelling” activity encourages students to use their imagination, actively listen to their peers, and contribute to a collaborative story. The writing activity allows them to practice describing a scene, reinforcing their vocabulary and sentence construction skills.
